Woman: Who is Me? was my very first commissioned film. And I'd almost forgotten about it until I was contacted by Vivian Ostrovsky of the SImone de Beauvoir Film Festival held at the Pompidou Center in Paris on June 21, 2026.
Judy Keller had the idea of taking the history of painting and sculpture through the male gaze to define female beauty. And women would now (in the 1970's feminist movement) have control over that. Judy wrote and produced it, but needed someone to collaborate with. She had been living in Rome, Italy and asked a friend who worked at Cinecitta if they knew anyone who could animate these images. When I had recently lived in Rome as part of RISD, the editor knew me and gave her my name. It was a fun project-- I did a "Ken Burns effect" on the images (way before Ken Burns and computers!) exposing the art for timing and creating the camera moves and it premiered at the Museum of Modern Art on my 26th birthday.
She gave me "director" credit and when Vivian Ostrovsky was looking for someone to give them permission to show the film, I was the only living person in the credits. I found Judy's children who were thrilled that their mother's film was being resurrected and you can find their website here. I am delighted it's found a new audience and asked the festival to change my title to "animation director" instead. Judy was the real director of the film.
