There was a time when recording from a TV didn't exist-- no home VCR's, pre-TIVO. Then VCR's became affordable and available and VHS tape was invented. TV networks didn't have to worry about their schedules as much and folks at home could watch any time. Or record current movies and not have to go to a video store and rent them. These spots send that message!
We had two spots, with very different challenges!
The Weather spot was quite simple and we were happy to give that one to filmmaker Fred Mogubgub. I really don't remember and can't find any information around here, but I do believe Richard Schenkman was our client and he came with storyboards. Freddy took the design of the board and replaced it with his own characters.
The VCR Theater spot had extravagant backgrounds and I took the storyboard and expanded it to layouts. The opening scene had to be on a 16-inch field instead of the normal 12 inch size-- and there was a cast of thousands. Linda Daurio, the fantastic watercolorist and background artist, made the ornate backgrounds. I remember the spots as having a very long lead time and we needed every day of it!
