Market of Hate had its world premiere on Saturday, October 19th at the 25th Annual Woodstock Film Festival! and we were one of 10 finalists for the Best Animated Short category! The programming of all the animated shorts was excellent-- there were 3 shows of about a dozen films each- "Family Friendly", "Mature Audiences" and "Fiercely Independent Animation". Market of Hate was in that block where almost all of the filmmakers were represented. It was great meeting up with old friends and making new ones!
About the film: In March of 2023 I woke up with a whispered warning—lyrics for a new film. Longtime collaborator Lanny Meyers wrote the music. This whisper turned into a full-throated shout after October 7th and I kept amending it until it was finished in March 2024. And current events keep making this, sadly, even more relevant.
I made it as a cry for compassion, the need to resist to the powerful forces that promote fear and hatred who create divisions in order to increase their own power and wealth.
It had a sneak peek at the Ottawa International Animation Festival as part of the Salon des Refusés (meaning it wasn't accepted as part of the official festival) -- but there a a nice crowd and it was well received! We are in the process of entering other film festivals so it cannot be streamed online. Here is the trailer and you can email Buzzco to get the password protected link.
