Young & Rubicam's JoAnne McShane chose Norm Bendell to tackle this delicate subject with sensitivity. Because we had already worked with Norm, we were allowed to bid on the job and then were awarded.
Always great to work with Norm and this was no exception!
When I finally met JoAnne, it turned out that I knew her husband!
My very first job in film was as a production assistant on Hart Perry's documentary about the Vietnam Veterans Against the War march on Memorial Day Weekend 1971. I was placed in Group 6: producer --John McShane, Camera-- Ed Lynch, Sound-- Fred Pflanzer and p.a.'s Gini Hashii and me. The march was from Concord, Massachusetts to the Boston Common and we camped out on the Lexington Common. The police came and we were arrested along with the vets, although we were part of the press corps. John and Ed were happy to shoot footage inside "jail" (actually a converted bus depot). I was delighted to be arrested for my ideas, but my enthusiasm waned when I had to be watched in the lady's room, couldn't shower in the morning and had to wait for breakfast until after my arraignment. But I made lifelong friends and my record was expunged sometime in the 1990's!
